"My artwork acts as a time-capsule or visual diary of contemporary routines and culture. I am interested in encouraging people to reflect on the way we live today."
Rebecca’s work is frequently compared to Edward Hopper; her interpretation of light-dominated, everyday scenes brings beauty to the mundane. She captures fleeting, and very relatable moments, encouraging the viewer to engage and reflect on contemporary life and routines.
She chooses to depict singular or small groups of figures in quiet, everyday urban settings such as cafes, bus stops, living rooms or narrow alleyways.
She uses muted colours, simple backgrounds and sensitive light and shadow. These, she combines with skilled composition and spacial usage to gently suggest or enhance a paintings’ narrative.
Her most recent work uses oils, a traditionally robust, layered and labour-intensive medium. Perhaps this media raises the moment’s permanence, and thereby importance.
Rebecca is an award-winning, British Portrait and Figurative artist.
Her work has been included in exhibitions by the Royal Academy, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, ING Discerning Eye, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize. Recent awards include The Surgeon’s Prize, RBA and The Michael Harding First Prize in Oil Painting.
Rebecca's work is in private collections in the UK, Belgium, Sweden, the USA, Hong Kong and Singapore.
